The church is set in a large park with a valuable cemetery. The church was established due to the need of a new cemetery in Mladá Boleslav, as the capacity of the existing cemetery of St. John was exceeded after the plague. The church was dedicated to the first deceased to have been buried there. In 1735, the church underwent baroque reconstruction, and a tower was added. Costly reconstruction of the dilapidated church and the totally run-down cemetery started in 2003.
The church and the surroundings have now been beautifully renovated and offer relaxation in the Hejda Garden romantic park with a beautiful view of the Old Town. Concerts are also held in the church owing to its excellent acoustic properties.
