Mladoboleslavsko

Vyskeř is a village situated at the foot of the hill of the same name, which is volcanic in origin. Standing on top of it is St. Anne's Chapel, which is open regularly during the summer (visits can also be arranged at other times of the year). The neo-Romanesque Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary with its wooden bell tower stands in the village, at the start of the trail leading up the hill. From the village, walk up into the Žehrovka valley to Podvyskeřský mill and then on past the Vysoké Kolo mill through the village of Skalany as far as the crossroads. From there, follow the green markers to the village of Pohoří with the turn-off to the Bezděz viewpoint. What is interesting about this village is that it used to have a windmill, which pumped water from the local well to the reservoir.

From Pohoří, walk down to the village of Podpohoří, to the yellow markers, and follow them to the ruins of Kozlov-Chlum castle. Nothing about this place is certain, not even its name, or whether it was a castle or merely a refuge where the local people took shelter during wartime. The rocky ridge of Kozlov was broken by a ditch to facilitate access from the top side; the steep slopes and rocks protected it the rest of the way around. Besides several rooms carved out of the rock, you can also see a circular tank.

As you leave the castle, notice how the rocks are inclined down the slope. This is caused by soft clays in the sandstone subsoil. You’ll also come across a number of collapsed blocks on the way down, and lots of others were used by masons a long time ago for the buildings in the surrounding area. At the points where the markers turn left along a broader path, we recommend continuing to the right down the hill to the bus station in the village of Podhájí.
