A rather austere but dignified sculptural work of the Baroque period is the plague column in Old Town Square in Mladá Boleslav (see metal trail), crowned with a heavily gilded statue of the Virgin Mary, which was erected as a memorial to the plague epidemic of 1680.
The column was erected in 1681 as a sign of gratitude for the town and the region having been spared in the plague epidemic one year earlier.
