The village is located 7 km south-east of Dobrovice, nestling on the edge of a vast forest complex. The name probably originated from the fruit which flourished here. Jabkenice village was made famous by the composer Bedřich Smetana when he spent the last 9 years of his life (1875–1884) in the local gamekeeper's house of the family of his daughter, Žofie Schwarzová.
The Museum of Bedřich Smetana with a permanent exhibition is dedicated to his life and that of his family in Jabkenice. The core of the exhibition is represented by the interiors of Smetana’s study and family salon, reconstructed according to contemporary witnesses. There is the opportunity of listening to some of Smetana’s works. The composer’s statue by František Bílek, created in 1924, is located in front of the forester’s lodge. Just outside the forester’s lodge is the picturesque Jabkenice Park with a system of forest ponds. A tour of the park can be undertaken on the marked paths, fully subordinated to the needs of the wildlife. The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary is in the centre; it is an attractive Gothic brick building from the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries. There is an elegant 15th-century wooden bell tower in the vicinity of the Church. One can also see the extraordinary 16th-century Calvary on the northern edge of the village, on the road leading to Pěčice.
